Before management and digital marketing, my first degree was in nursing. I completed a Bachelor of Nursing (Sarjana Keperawatan, S.Kep.) at Universitas Muhammadiyah Banjarmasin (UMBJM) in Indonesia, admitted in September 2018 and graduating in February 2021, two years and five months later, well ahead of the program’s regular eight-semester length. It followed on from a Diploma III in Nursing I’d completed at the same institution’s predecessor college in 2016.
The Program
The curriculum ran 154 credits across 56 courses: a full body-systems sequence (cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, digestive, endocrine, neurobehavior, integumentary, reproductive, and sensory perception nursing), alongside community nursing (I to III), emergency and disaster nursing, pharmacology, biostatistics, nursing research methodology, nursing management, and a thesis. Clinical training ran in parallel through Basic Nursing Skills I and II, three rounds of Pre-Ners Practice, and a Comprehensive Nursing Practice placement.
What It Covers
The Diploma Supplement (SKPI) that accompanies the degree spells out what it’s meant to certify: comprehensive nursing care across specializations (medical-surgical, pediatric, maternity, psychiatric, community, family, and gerontic nursing), basic trauma and cardiac life support (BTCLS) in emergency and disaster situations, medication administration across oral, topical, and parenteral routes, nursing diagnosis and care planning grounded in patient data, nursing management from individual care plans up to running a ward, and research methods for evidence-based practice.
Under Indonesia’s National Qualification Framework (KKNI), the degree sits at Level 6, the standard bachelor’s-level qualification, one step below the professional Ners licensure track, which I didn’t go on to pursue.
Beyond the Coursework
Outside the classroom, I sat on the adjudication panel for UMBJM’s internal selection for the 2019 National Universities Debating Championship (NUDC). I also completed a Mandarin language course (Level I) through the Taiwan Education Center at UMBJM, and attended seminars on public policy and innovation, personal branding, and the business of translation.
The degree closed with a thesis on leadership style and clinical supervision quality, which I later rewrote into a self-published literature review , free to read in Indonesian and English.
